# MacGauge Primary English URL: https://macgauge.stevenacz.com/ Spanish URL: https://macgauge.stevenacz.com/es/ Source code: https://github.com/StevenACZ/MacGauge Latest release: https://github.com/StevenACZ/MacGauge/releases/latest MacGauge is an open-source macOS menu bar utility by Steven Coaila Zaa (StevenACZ). It combines fan control, thermal monitoring, and optional CPU, memory, and network modules for Apple Silicon Macs. ## Requirements - Apple Silicon Mac (M1 or later) - macOS 13 Ventura or later - Macs without fans are detected as passively cooled and cannot use fan control ## What it does - Shows live temperature and per-fan RPM in the menu bar. - Offers automatic, manual percentage, and editable temperature-curve modes. - Adds optional CPU, memory, and network modules with detail popovers. - Supports English and Spanish and includes a power-user CLI. - Uses read-only monitoring by default. - Uses a narrow privileged helper for fan writes after explicit authorization. - Can return fans to macOS automatic control after three minutes of app silence during armed manual control, measured in awake time. ## Privacy and network behavior MacGauge has no analytics and requests no Accessibility permission. The app contacts GitHub Releases for update checks, which can be disabled, and requests the public IP from api.ipify.org only when the network detail is opened. ## Safety Fan control changes hardware behavior and must be used with care. macOS, thermalmonitord, or firmware may override a requested target. The app provides verified writes, contested-control detection, a restore-to-automatic action, and a helper watchdog, but does not promise absolute control or risk-free use. MacGauge was previously named MacFan and, before that, M4FanControl. Those names are historical aliases; MacGauge is the current public brand.
